KeyChron Q5 Max Keyboard Review
When I first started working from home, the first thing I wanted to invest in was a clacky keyboard. At the time, I didn’t know they were called mechanical keyboards, but after researching them, I ended up buying one. I got myself a Keychron K4 on September 8th, 2020. Fast forward to 2026, and I have had about 8 different mechanical keyboards since and am head over heels for typing with real feedback. I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to return to where it all started with a new Keychron Q5 Max keyboard. It has been a wonderful experience from the unboxing on.
The first thing that struck me about the Q5 was the keyboard’s weight. It’s a fully metal casing, so it has some real mass to it. For some people, that may not be what they’re looking for, but for me, I love when my tech has real weight. Nothing about the keyboard feels cheap in any way. It’s a true premium product that lives up to its 239.99 price point (at the time of writing, it is on sale for 219.99!). When I am going to pay a premium price for a product, I want it to FEEL premium and not just work well. If it were plastic, I might not be able to recommend it at this price point. But everything about the keyboard is worth the asking price.
There has been zero lag in my typing since I switched to the Keychron Q5 Max as my daily keyboard. The keyboard uses a 2.4 GHz wireless connection, featuring a 1000 Hz polling rate for crystal-clear performance. I spend a lot of time at my desk typing for work, GateCrashers, and my own writing, so when I press a key, I expect it to be as quick as my fingers. I have had issues with other wireless keyboards, with lag that made me extremely frustrated because they couldn’t keep up with me. But with the Keychron Q5, there have been no signs of lag in any of my input. It stands the test of writing 9 million things at once, like I have been doing.
My only slight issue is that one of the keys, the U specifically, seemed to be a bit wonky out of the box. Luckily, the keyboard comes with replacement switches. It was an easy fix: remove the old switch and replace it with the new one, which solved the problem. I had everything I needed in order to replace the wonky key in the box, so it didn’t feel like an issue to me.
From my first keyboard to the Keychron Q5, I have fallen in love with mechanical keyboards. For the price, this keyboard is the quality you want from an everyday keyboard. It feels great, performs excellently, and has that perfect click you are looking for when you use something mechanical.
