Launchkey MK4 MIDI Keyboard

Learning new things isn’t easy. There is so much to do when you take up a new hobby, craft, or anything that requires real time and dedication to master. What I wanted most from myself in 2026 was to be open to trying new things. I have pushed myself to write more, learn more, and branch out to experience as much as I can. One of those things has been music. I learned to read music in high school and sang for a very long time. But I had never actually made music, and I wouldn’t go so far as to say what I do now is create music either. With that said, I am still trying, experimenting, and learning with the Launchkey MK4 37 Key MIDI keyboard.

For those of us who don’t know what a MIDI keyboard is, it’s a musical device with piano keys, the number of which can vary depending on the keyboard. It does not make a sound on its own, which I learned when I first sat down to play with it. Instead, it sends digital data about which note you play, how long you hold it, and how hard you hit the key. That data is relayed to a computer or synthesizer to trigger virtual sounds.

I was mistaken at first about what a MIDI keyboard was versus a synthesizer, but a MIDI keyboard is a very versatile tool. It allows you to use the keyboard more as a tool for making music rather than as a one-trick pony, as many instruments are. It felt like unlocking a full toolbox when I expected to just take out a hammer. Thankfully, the Launchkey MK4 had very clear instructions, making installing the included software a breeze.

Even though much of my time with the Launchkey MK4 has been spent playing around in the app “BandLab” on my iPad, it’s been a wonderful experience. With the instrument’s ease of use, I have been able to sit down for a few hours and just follow my own groove, coming out the other side with music. Is it good? Probably not. But there is something so incredible about the feeling of walking away with something that is a testament to your skills. It’s made me dig further into learning all about production and sound from a number of creators on YouTube.

There have been hours spent going back and forth between the keyboard and tutorials to try out new things and experiment with everything the Launchkey MK4 can do. It’s a wonderful device that has let me unplug from everything else and just create. My hands are too busy to check my phone, so I can do long periods of just being by myself playing with the keyboard.

If you’re looking to pick up something new to invest time in getting better at, Launchkey MK4 is a great gateway into music. It’s a lot less intimidating than learning an instrument like guitar, but it may end up being more complicated with the breadth of things you can accomplish. It doesn’t feel like biting off too much but rather getting the chance to slowly eat a meal that gets better as you go.
