From Nightmare to Page: Exquisite Corpses: Rascal Randy #1

Prepare to hop out of your seats with this scary in-depth look at the making of the Exquisite Corpses spinoff series, coming from Tiny Onion & Image Comics

Prepare to hop out of your seat from fear with a scary in-depth look at the process of making Exquisite Corpses: Rascal Randy #1, spinning out of the bestselling original horror comic book series Exquisite Corpses co-created by James Tynion IV and Michael Walsh. Tynion's production house Tiny Onion and Image Comics are teaming up to bring back everyone's favorite bunny mascot Rascal Randy, one of the favorite killers from Season One, in a new five-issue limited series, hitting shelves this July. The FOC for issue #1 is this upcoming Monday, June 15.

Exquisite Corpses: Rascal Randy is crafted by several returning Corpse Crew creators that worked on Exquisite Corpses with the exciting addition of fan-favorite artist Dylan Burnett (Cosmic Ghost Rider, Arcade Kings). The series is written by Tyler Boss (Universal Monsters: The Phantom of the Opera, You'll Do Bad Things), colored by Eisner Award winner Jordie Bellaire (The Nice House on the Lake) and lettered by the brilliant Becca Carey (Absolute Wonder Woman).

In Exquisite Corpses: Rascal Randy, the sleepy little town of Aurora Springs, NY, has exactly one claim to fame: it's the birthplace of Rascal Randy. Not the man in the suit—that man has never mattered. He was no one until he put the mascot head on for the first time… not until he felt the life leave someone's body with his thickly furred gloves wrapped around them.

No, Aurora Springs is the birthplace of Rascal Randy the rabbit, who, once upon a time, was poised to become the greatest animated character this country had ever seen—until greed and tragedy changed his trajectory forever. Witness the events before season one of Exquisite Corpses that made Rascal Randy New Jersey's selection for America's deadliest game. When chaos comes hopping into town, the secret sordid history of Rascal Randy will finally be revealed.

"It is a bit of a tricky job in that, the thing that makes Randy scary in the mainline Exquisite Corpses book is not knowing too much about him, he's the series' Michael Meyers or Freddy so there's a danger in over-explaining a horror character like them, but I think the path Dylan and I have cut has given us the chance to have our cake and eat it too."

"Rascal Randy #1 follows up on the energy that made him the scene stealer with his every appearance in Exquisite Corpses. Even if the story is set before the games in Exquisite Corpses, it stands alone as its own title. You could pick up this spin-off without having read Exquisite Corpses and still enjoy it just as much…A perfect 10/10 that stands alone from the series before to slash out its own path."

"Exquisite Corpses: Rascal Randy #1 proves the Exquisite Corpses universe has room to grow beyond its central competition of killers. Boss shifts the focus toward mystery and atmosphere, building tension through local legends, buried history, and an increasingly unnerving mascot. Burnett’s artwork is a major highlight, delivering scares with precision while maintaining a distinctive visual style that feels both inviting and threatening. The issue also succeeds as a standalone experience, requiring little knowledge of the larger universe while rewarding longtime fans with subtle connections. By the final page, Rascal Randy establishes itself as more than a side story, offering a horror mystery that is eager to carve out its own identity."

"The book does it all, and the result is a really intriguing part one to this character origin. Finally, I won’t spoil the Exquisite Corpses finale here since it’s not out in trade, but there’s also an in-story reason this character makes a great choice for its own mini, and that gives this first issue a nice sense of propulsion as well as a great reason to read it all in full."

"Exquisite Corpses: Rascal Randy #1 is an awesome kickoff for the first spinoff tale from the world of Exquisite Corpses. The creative team does an amazing job of making a spinoff, but making it unique as well. The story doesn’t reveal too much, but just enough to bring you back for more. I’m a huge fan of Exquisite Corpses and am beyond stoked that we are getting more of this universe. Even better, this first issue delivers on its promise instead of feeling like a quick cash-in."
Fanlight Zone
"Exquisite Corpses: Rascal Randy #1 does a great job establishing the setting and characters for this prequel series, and doesn’t forget to give us a taste of the red stuff at the end to highlight what darkness lies ahead. Boss and Burnett have a compelling collaboration here that is steeped in the humanity the original series was so good at, while not forgoing the abundant and shocking violence that compelled so many readers before. Needless to say, we can’t wait to see what dark road Rascal Randy’s story heads down!"
