Batman/Superman: Worlds Finest #1 opens with fast-paced action and calamitous catastrophe. Zany dialogue keeps a connection for old and new fans alike to the comics of yesteryear with a pleasing mix of familiar and new throughout. No previous reading is required, trust me I didn’t and still understood everything and most importantly enjoyed it so much!

Superman is often deemed unrelatable to some and I agreed for a while until I began reading more, and to be honest who doesn’t ever feel out of place sometimes? Feeling lost and confused, it always helps to have a friend to ground you, and Batman does exactly that.

The dynamic between these two has always intrigued me; both men are entirely different but have the strongest bond of trust, always looking out for one another. This being an integral part of their relationship for decades, the pair having this aspect certainly appeals to many – not to mention: their dialogue forever surfaces giggles and snickers, again jumping back into the wacky ways of the past while also not going too far back for it to become cringe. It’s a contemporary blend that works extremely well. 

But it’s not only Batman and Superman who work well together, there’s also the Boy Wonder himself, Robin. He stood out to me in World’s Finest #1 for his humor and demand for recognition in his scenes. He and Batman always have clever back and forths that are a real highlight of this book

Written by Mark Waid who has been working with DC since the 80s, he is so well-rounded in his writing style and has a developed approach when seeping into the mindsets and motives of each character. His deep knowledge of heroes’ pasts serves him well throughout Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #1. This guy has been on the scene for years and is absolutely a trustworthy person to handle your favorite characters. 

Art by Dan Mora will forever be recognizable to me, he has a unique edge that makes him stand out. I adore his Dark Knights of Steel comic covers and his work from Detective Comics last year. He has such a vibrant illusive flare that fits well in the worlds he is creating, and that is certainly true in Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #1. One of the first art pieces we see is his Poison Ivy who is a stunning, true goddess of the green. That was a personal highlight for me; he knows how to make bad guys look good from an artistic point of view. It was also nice to see Batman sport his black and grey spandex instead of his now-iconic all-black suit – thanks, Dan!

Familiar fan favorites are also featured, the big one being the beloved Doom Patrol. It was a blast to see this team interact with Batman and Superman, and they really brought realism to the situation; we would all be doomed if Superman decided to murder us all. It’s a bucket of fun to read through and follow how these characters are going to manage with Metallo, the cyborg with the kryptonite heart – infecting Superman with red kryptonite and causing delusional hysteria.

Overall, I recommend adding this book to your pulls if you’re seeking some familiarity mixed in alongside new stories. It’s a delight having the iconic duo sharing pages in such a wholesome and exciting way.
