Batman & Robin: Year One - Dynamic Duos #1 Review

The return, or reliving, of the Silver Age of DC Comics is something which has been an apparent theme across nearly all of acclaimed writer Mark Waid’s work over at DC in the last five years. The Silver Age influence can be seen in titles such as Batman/Superman: Worlds Finest, Shazam, and Justice League: Unlimited, and this trend of new stories with a healthy injection of nostalgic tropes is not left out in the debut of Batman and Robin: Year One – Dynamic Duos, a title which once again places us in the formative years of the Boy Wonder (this time everyone’s favourite Dick Grayson) as we centre around the growing pains of Burce and Dick learning not only how to be a team, but a family.

If it sounds like you’ve read that before it’s because you probably have. This book is not trying to be groundbreaking and if it was, I’d say that would be a tremendous struggle as it competes with the hundreds of Batman and Robin adventures that have either covered this same period or expanded upon it. It was only in 2021 that award winning team Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen covered this same era in their title Robin and Batman. However, none of that is to say that this comic is a waste of time or bad, neither of these comments would be true. Batman and Robin: Year One – Dynamic Duos is a very fun, pulpy book that clearly wears its heart on its sleeve for this first issue. Waid’s writing is clearly harping on the lovable dynamic of a wide-eyed excited young Robin against the stone-jawed Batman. This tension allows for the book to both explore their relationship as crime fighters and family. The book asks both of its protagonists to explore their natures in and out of costume. Robin is tasked to infiltrate a youth gang and Bruce goes on a date with both story threads showing the tensions in both of their dual identities.

The art direction of the title however is what makes it stand out, Chirs Samnee brings an artistic style akin to influences like Darwyn Cooke and Batman: The Animated Series, which allows for some lovely panelling, my favourite being the introduction to Batman in a very Batman: Year One inspired monologue and presence, contrasted nicely with Robin’s more bombastic and light-hearted reveal onto the page. It would also seem this contrast is being generated in the set up by our assumed main antagonists, the new character Methabel, an orphan kid caught up in a street gang and her guardian angel Catwoman who seemingly wants to take the kid under her wing. I’m sure this will lead to a fun inverse of the dynamic duo in issues to come. Overall this was a fun first issue trying to find its footing in the now quite expansive range of stories for this dynamic duo in particular.
