The time has finally arrived. Gotham City Sirens is back! I never thought I’d see my favorite trio share a comic book again – I’ve been counting down the weeks until I could get my hands on the first issue and talk about it. Can you believe it’s been 15 years since the first issue of Gotham City Sirens was released? Being one of my absolute favorite stories, you can imagine my excitement when I heard about this at the beginning of the year. I’m gutted it’s only for a month since we’ve waited so long for the trio to reunite as the Sirens, but after the first issue, I can really tell it won’t disappoint fans.
Even better, we’re getting additional characters such as White Rabbit and Punchline thrown into the mix, making it all the more interesting. Bud and Lou make an appearance, too. I’m so glad they’ve been in many more comics lately. Harley doesn’t feel right without her hyenas.
Gotham City Sirens #1 feels very short but it’s packed with an interesting setup for the month to come and for me personally, I think it was a cracking first issue. The art by Matteo Lolli pops, and the story is intriguing and has me itching to find out how it will conclude. I’m living for Selina, Ivy, and Harley working together again. Overall, a strong start.
Getting into the team running the show, shout out to a fellow Irish Dubliner, Tríona Farrell, who has been a phenomenal comic book colorist for years. I am delighted to see her working on a book with all my favorite characters. It’s cool to see Irish people working in comics, especially those I’m a huge fan of!
I really enjoyed Leah Williams’ writing – she brought back the feeling I got from the first time reading Gotham City Sirens, way back when, and I honestly felt it picked up right where it left off. The banter between characters is something I’ve missed; I got some good chuckles from the first issue.
We also need to talk about comic covers for a moment because my bank account will definitely be empty as I want to buy every single one. The two variant covers by W. Scott Forbes are to die for; the art screams Met Gala. They are a must-have for everyone’s collection.
Terry and Rachel Dodson are also back for the main cover along with Guillem March, which I’m delighted about since they also worked on the original Gotham City Sirens over a decade ago!
Natasha Szerdys covers pay homage to Harley Quinn’s first comic appearance in The Batman Adventures #12, which is perfect for every Harley collector. There’s been a few variations of this cover over the years, and they look stunning side by side.
I believe Gotham City Sirens fans worldwide will be satisfied with this series. I’m certainly hyped and undoubtedly added it to my pull to collect all those beautiful variants. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do!
