Titans: Beast World #1 Review

DC’s latest event kicks off in beastly fashion.

Tom Taylor is back with another wacky adventure for us all to enjoy in Titans: Beast World #1. I’m genuinely always surprised with his storylines, and none have disappointed me yet. I think we all thought Starro was to be the big bad but as it turns out; Starro helped contain an even bigger Sea Star conqueror which is plenty more evil and unsettling. To make things even more bizarre; Beast Boy must match his opponent by transforming into a Starro – or as he prefers “Garro” – to save the world from perishing under this alien’s wrath. With that, let’s rip into the pages to get a better taste of Titans Beast World.

To start, the “Forevernauts” would not be the name I’d pick for a team who is supposedly going to prevent the end of the world and save humanity, however, I feel this name is intentionally funny because with every world ending story comes a scapegoat group that fails the original mission leaving room for the successor team to swoop in and save the day. That team? The Titans! Beast Boy risks everything for Earth – I’ll admit this story arc is one of the most strangely terrifying comics I have come across. Just imagine, watching two cosmic starfish fight each other while people are getting possessed by spores cramming themselves down their throats. Completely and utterly odd, but if you can lose yourself in the story, all the better.

The art is especially prominent, with good depths and concepts, managing a space setting can’t be easy but the team makes it look flawless. It felt like watching an episode of Doctor Who, let’s get this team on an episode – they’d fit right in. Both my arachnophobia and megalophobia kicked in reading Titans: Beast World #1. Vast empty spaces and a humongous spider-like creature? Yeah, thank heavens this is fiction because my soul would ascend from my body had I ever witnessed such a terror-stricken scene. Safe to say the artists achieved their goal.

Now just when you think things couldn’t become any more strange. The aforementioned spores begin turning their victims into all kinds of beasts. Talk about quality furry content right? Jokes aside, things are not going well for Beast Boy considering he was willing to give his life in an attempt to prevent a colossal alien from invading the planet. The plot reminded me of that Batman The Animated Series episode “Terror in the Sky” simply for its similar elements of humans becoming beasts. Except instead of bats like in the episode it’s starfish. I swear, I will have to follow this story to find out what happens next. You can’t feed me this many oddities and expect me to walk away with unanswered questions. I didn’t think I’d be on a need-to-know basis with such an abnormal plot but I have to admit – whether you think you’ll enjoy it or not – you’re going to want to throw an eye to see how this plays out. Titans: Beast World #1 could pass as one of H.P. Lovecraft’s stories.
